Choosing What Time of Year to Cruise the Kimberley

What is the best time of year to cruise the Kimberley?

The ideal time to cruise the Kimberley depends on your personal preference and what you’d like to get out of the experience!
Below is an overview of some of our top highlights, along with the best times to experience each one. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, wildlife, or ideal weather, this guide will help you find the perfect time to visit.

March to May: Waterfalls, Barramundi & Crocodiles

  • Waterfalls: After the wet season, the waterfalls are at their most spectacular. The mighty 80-meter King George Falls is especially impressive during this time.
  • Barramundi Fishing: If you’re a keen angler, March to May is ideal for barramundi fishing. The warmer waters make the fish more active, providing a great opportunity for anglers.
  • Crocodiles: Saltwater crocodiles are visible year-round, but they’re most active during the warmer months. March to May provides plenty of chances to spot these amazing creatures in their natural habitat.
  • Bird Watching: The warmer months from March to May are also the best time to see a variety of bird species, including migratory birds heading south. You can see even more birds on our Ashmore Reef cruise.

May to October: Horizontal Falls & Prime Weather

  • Horizontal Falls: The Horizontal Falls flow year-round, but the May to October window offers clearer weather and better conditions. For the ultimate thrill, plan your visit around the Spring Tides (full moon and new moon) to experience the most dramatic tidal movements.
  • Sunny Skies: May to August offers the perfect weather, with the lowest humidity of the year and cooler temperatures (around 30°C). June and July are especially pleasant, with cooler, more comfortable days.
  • Snorkelling: From March to September, you can enjoy swimming in the Kimberley’s freshwater holes. For those passionate about snorkelling, our Rowley Shoals cruises in October provide incredible underwater visibility—up to 50 meters—thanks to calmer Easterly winds.

August to October: Whales, Wildlife & Wildflowers

  • Whales: From August to October, you’ll have the chance to witness the humpback whale migration from Antarctica to the warmer Kimberley waters to breed. It’s an unforgettable experience for whale watchers.
  • Wildlife: October is the peak time for wildlife sightings as the landscape dries out and animals move further for water. The shift in the environment makes it an exciting time for nature enthusiasts.
  • Wildflowers: October also brings a stunning display of wildflowers, creating a colourful contrast to the normally red Kimberley terrain, making for an unforgettable natural spectacle.
  • Bird Watching: In October and November, migratory birds from the northern hemisphere flock to the Kimberley. If you’re keen to see these incredible species—some even from Siberia—our Ashmore Reef cruise is also a great option.
