Chasing Barramundi: The Ultimate Kimberley Fishing Experience

Ask anyone who’s spent time in the Kimberley, and they’ll tell you the same thing, there’s nothing quite like the moment a barramundi hits the line. It’s a rush that grabs you instantly, whether you’ve been fishing your whole life or you’re casting a rod for the very first time.

Out here, surrounded by ancient red cliffs and the quiet hum of the wilderness, chasing barra becomes more than a pastime… it becomes part of the Kimberley experience itself.

For us, barra days are some of our favourites. You can feel the excitement on board as we pull into a hidden creek at first light, the water still glassy from the night before. The smell of mangroves, the distant call of a sea eagle, and the soft splash of baitfish on the surface. That’s when you know you’re in the right country.

Where do the Barramundi Live

The Kimberley is full of incredible fishing country, but barra have very specific habits. They’re warm water fish and love the heat, which is why the post wet season period is so productive. As the big rains recede and the system settles, the water warms and the fish switch on.

You’ll often find them hiding in tidal estuaries, winding rivers and those narrow creeks that snake inland between the cliffs. Places like the Hunter River, Mitchell River and Drysdale River – anywhere the tides push baitfish into pockets of calmer water – you’ve usually got a good chance of finding barra waiting in the shadows. But more importantly, barra are ambush predators. They sit low, often right in the mud, using structure and colour changes in the water to hide before striking.

One of the best clues is the meeting point between clear water and heavy mud lines. Baitfish like mullet push into clearer water trying to stay visible and safe, while barra sit in the dirtier edge waiting. That line between clean and muddy water can be a feeding highway.

Add in the Kimberley’s massive tidal movement, up to 11 metres in some areas, and everything changes day to day. A snag that’s perfect structure on one tide might be completely underwater and unfishable for the next couple of weeks. Knowing what structure will be available, and when, is everything.

Reading the Tides and Structure

Tides run the show in the Kimberley. On big spring lows, barra often sit in the gutters and deeper drains where water funnels out, concentrating bait. On neap tides, when the movement is gentler, mangrove snags and structure become prime holding spots.

It’s not just about the tide height, but the phase. Understanding whether you’re coming off the springs or building into them helps predict where the bait has been pushed and where it’s likely to gather. And where the mullet goes, the barra are never far behind.

With 11 metre tidal swings, no two days are ever the same. The river system you fish today can behave completely differently tomorrow. That’s why local knowledge of the area, the structure, and how each system fishes at different stages of the tide makes such a difference.

Techniques our Crew Swear By

Every crew member has their own favourite way to tempt a barra. Some of us love slow-rolling soft plastics along the snags and muddy edges; others swear by live bait when the water’s a bit stirred up and the fish are holding deep.

On still, warm mornings, working a lure across those mud lines or along submerged structure can trigger explosive strikes. But more than any single technique, barra fishing is about patience and observation. Watch the tide, look for colour changes in the water, and pay attention to where the bait is moving. That’s usually where the action starts.

What we always tell guests is this: barra fishing is about patience and reading the water. Take a moment to watch how the tide’s moving, look for disturbances on the surface, listen for the pops of feeding fish. And don’t worry if you’re brand new to it, half the fun is learning along the way, and our crew love showing guests the tricks that work in our backyard.

A Few Insider Tips

  • Warm water is your friend. Barra are far more active once the system heats up after the wet.

  • And of course, this is crocodile country, part of what makes the Kimberley so wild and special. We always make sure everyone stays safe, keeps hands inside the boat, and stays aware of the water around them. Respect the environment, and it rewards you.

2025: What a year it has been at Diversity Charters!

From the huge tides of the Kimberley to the crystal-clear waters of Rowley Shoals, 2025 has been packed with adventure, laughs, unforgettable moments and some ripper guests.

We started the year with some windy weather from Cyclone Errol, which blew across the North-West coast as we were kicking off our 14-day Kimberley journeys from March through to May. Those early weeks brought big tides, dramatic skies and some of the most powerful waterfalls we’ve seen in years. King Cascade Waterfall in particular was the best we had ever seen it! Besides chasing thunderous cascades, we were also landing some impressive fish, with our deckhand Foss (AKA Gronk) taking out the Big Fish award landing a monster at 106cm in Boongarri Creek (photo left).

Whilst Foss was a strong contender, the Barra King for this year was awarded to Jack (photo right), an incredibly tenacious 14 year old fisho from Queensland who kept our deckhands on their toes reeling in barra after barra. Jack graciously accepted his crown at the coronation ceremony on board Diversity II in June this year.

From May, we travelled up and down the lower Kimberley coast on our 9-day itineraries. Our days were filled with warm sunshine, glassy anchorages and guests cooling off in hidden swimming holes. Whilst the landscape captivated during the day, it was our crew that stole the show in the evenings. Guests on board were treated to some late night entertainment including cameo’s from Elton John, Judge Judy, King Neptune (Cal) and Hulk Hogan. Whilst on Diversity II Zac took out the 2025 Panna Cotta challenge (heavy weight division) for the second year in a row.

In September we were thrilled to welcome back several groups on Diversity III for their annual fishing trip, and the fishing did not disappoint. In October, our 6 Day Kimberley Escape itinerary was in full swing on Diversity II, and whilst the weather was hot, the fishing was hotter! We look forward to seeing you all again next year.

We wrapped up the season with our Rowley Shoals adventures, filled with crystal-clear blue water and abundant marine life. Guests spent their days drifting above coral gardens, snorkeling alongside curious fish and diving with some chilled sharks. Our crew have been amazing all year, and go to great lengths to ensure our guests don’t miss a thing. If you need proof, this is the exact turtle that a guest missed viewing earlier in the day at the Shoals – thanks Sam!

There is so much to take in, actively and passively, during your Kimberley River Cruise, that at Diversity Charters our goal is for our clients to not have hindsight and look back on their adventure to realise they have seen a lot above the tide line, but little with regards to what lives below it.

There is an easy remedy for that. Let’s go fishing! You may be a novice or an experienced, fishing tragic. With our fishing junkets the “What can we catch? Where do they live, and What do they eat?” Are all reasonable questions, and can be easily answered by one of our dedicated, fishing professionals. They will put you on the bite, no worries. 

The following information will hopefully give you an idea of the Who, What, Where and When of fishing on board one of the Diversity Charters tenders. Fishing on Kimberley Cruise with Diversity Charters

Our experienced guides can arrange a fishing expedition in the river, reef or inlet that will guarantee sore muscles the next day, from the battles with the local leviathans. 

What more motivation does one need than the opportunity to hook into some of the biggest, strongest and fastest fish in Australia, better yet the world. Our chef’s can even cook up your catch for dinner if you desire. The information contained will help you with what a day fishing in the pristine waters of the Kimberley is all about!

The Iconic Australian fish to catch is the Barramundi. People travel across the world to catch this Australian apex predator in the wild, and are a wide spread species that can vary by name, such as the Australian or Asian Sea Bass.  As its popularity grew as a sport fish the Aboriginal name Barramundi caught on, meaning large scale river fish. These beauties inhabit both salt and fresh water. They can be found lurking around rocky ocean shoals, river mouths, mangrove roots, fallen trees or creek mouths. They are fast growers and are commonly found at the 65-80 cm length. Barra change their sex as they grow, with juveniles less than 80 cm fish most likely being males and those larger than 80cm are likely females. 

These apex predators can be caught using soft plastics, surface poppers or trolling minnow lures. You will know you’re in the presence of these fish when they actively feed, as they can often be heard at night loudly gulping down surface bait. Your guide will refer to this as “Boofing”,
a phenomena that just might happen to you, if you make the right cast!

Two other must catch species often found hunting together are the prolific fighters referred to as the GT, Giant Trevally, and Queenfish or “Skinnies”. Both species are aggressive and feed in packs with a big GT able to tow the boat (+25 Kgs) and metre long Queenfish trying to escape the feeling of being hooked by using long bursts of speed coupled with massive acrobatic jumps. They can be found wherever the tide rushes in or out, patrolling sandy beaches or near exposed rocky points and coral bommies.

They are possibly the two most exciting saltwater species to catch when using surface baits or poppers, as their explosive hits are legendary. Both species are average table fare but provide a much better fishing experience. We recommend surface lures and hard bodied lures that are retrieved quickly.

Imagine being a participant in this scenario. You are sitting on deck of the mother ship MV Diversity II with friends or family having an ice tea, coffee or maybe even a cold one? Suddenly, your crew’s attention is averted and they excitedly point to the ocean and says “Look at that! A group of birds diving into the water.” You immediately focus and become a witness to one of the regions aerial and underwater assaults that is all too common up in the Far North. One bird after another dive-bombing the once flat water, it then soon becomes a frothing whirlpool as the assault now is joined from below.

Legions of tuna, mackerel, and even sword fish have consolidated and pushed bait fish into a concentrated surface school with an all out attack. Fortunately with three tenders and round the clock service, we will get you where do you need to be! In one of our skiffs casting metal slugs at the boiling mass and reeling feverishly is our guess. What an unforgettable rush catching one of the various pelagics that inhabit the Kimberley. 

You may want to tone the fishing down a bit and focus more on species that can be caught at a more leisurely pace. We have you covered!

Maybe drifting baits like fresh prawns or white baits near creek mangroves and submerged wood. That’s a sure fire way to hook beautiful and tasty Mangrove Jacks or Spotted Cod. It may sound a bit tame as presented but Mangrove Jacks and Cod pull tenaciously when hooked. Jacks are also one of few species of fish that when handled will actively try to lock jaws on your hand. A Cod may resist striking  your bait if a  massive Grouper or larger Cod has entered it’s territory. Both species are similar in appearance. You’ll know when you catch once since all have blotchy skin, large heads, squat bodies and sharp gill rackers. Some Grouper and Cod grow so large that they are too big to be caught (under normal fishing conditions.) 

The same pater noster bottom technique in muddy tidal runout water might land you an Australian Blue or Threadfin Salmon aka King Salmon. Not to confuse you, they are not related to northern hemisphere salmonoids nor the Australian Salmon that frequents our Southern coast in mass during cooler months. The Threadfin Salmon is larger than the Blue species and adults can be over a metre in length. Note on the accompanying picture the under side tentacles that the fish uses to find prey in the low visibility tidal water. They are excellent eating fish if served up the same as they are caught.

If you’re stopped near a submerged coral reef then get out the rods and try to catch the striking Nannigai or possible Australias #1 best fish to eat, Coral Trout. Paternoster rigs with strips or squid pieces on circle hooks and big sinkers which can handle the bite. Soft plastics and jigs will also bring home dinner. 

Now it is understandable that this article deals with some of the most likely species to hook into while cruising the Kimberley. A Once in a Lifetime Experience

With so much on offer in this beautiful region, we wanted to give you a few of our favourite must-sees!

Kimberley Flora

Different to many natural landmarks located in other Australian cities, you luckily won’t have to share your adventures with hoards of tourists. As the Kimberley region’s most notable landmarks are extremely remote, they’ll provide you with a more rewarding experience than your standard trip to Bondi Beach.

Mitchell Falls is one of the area’s most impressive waterfalls but would involve a strenuous 7km hike via the Punamii-unpuu Trail if travelling by foot and without the appropriate equipment. Fortunately, if you choose the right Kimberley cruise an experienced operator will include a more enjoyable helicopter flight, allowing you to take in a birds-eye view of the falls and explore the area around the Mitchell Plateau. 

These multi-tiered falls are just the tip of the iceberg for remarkable water features in the Kimberley region that you’ll be able to witness. Talbot Bay is home to the famous Horizontal Falls, an image seen by many but experienced by few. As a natural compression of the world’s highest tidal shifts occurs, the force of the water is pushed through a small opening in the rocks – Sir David.

Attenborough described it as “one of the greatest natural wonders of the world,” as the falls flow sideways and in both directions. Whether you view this phenomenon by helicopter or by boat – we recommend either, as both offers are unique, once in a lifetime experiences.

Kimberley Fauna

When choosing a Kimberley cruise, choose one that allows you to experience both the marine and terrestrial wildlife of the region.

On land you’ll encounter Goannas, Mitchell’s water monitor lizards, and the staple (yet beautiful) frilled-neck lizards. There’s the possibility of making contact with a Dingo or two and with a bit of luck, you might have a chance to pull up a few of Australia’s most prized fish – The Barramundi.

Rock wallabies define the landscape, while the definitive sound of red-tailed cockatoos and kookaburras produce the chorus for your journey. Apart from the fossilized dinosaur prints, you’re able to experience while in Broome, you can meet living dinosaurs along your journey as well.

You’re likely to encounter more docile freshwater crocodiles, as well as giant saltwater crocs, which are at the top of the food chain in the North Australian eco-system (take caution).

You can also experience some of the best fishing and crabbing that Australia has to offer, as the resources are more than plentiful to sustain such large amounts of life.

Offshore, you can visit Montgomery Reef to see Australian snubfin dolphins, dugongs, and several species of sea turtles. There are some of Australia’s most important bird sanctuaries, including the Lacepede Islands and the Sterna Islands, which are the habitat for large seabird colonies.  You are guaranteed to be immersed in the natural beauty that is the Kimberley, a truly untouched piece of the world that needs little introduction.

25,000 years of Culture at your doorstep

A large portion of the region has been added to Australia’s National Heritage List, largely due to the significance of Indigenous sites spread throughout the Kimberley and in part to the defining landscapes and rich wildlife. 

More than half of the Kimberley’s population is of Aboriginal descent; the stories of their ancestors are depicted in graphic tales of rock art across the region. Many of these sites are found in remote caves that are only accessible by boat, and are known as open art galleries by the locals. 

During the Gwion period (around 20,000 – 25,000 years ago), Early Aboriginal culture was depicted through elaborate rock paintings of human figures that are present along the coast as well as unusual figures created during the Wanjina period (around 3,800-4,000 years ago), both of which are accessed by boat to the Biggie Island. Other rock art found in the Kimberley region includes paintings of local wildlife that may date back as far as the Pleistocene epoch (2.5 million to 11,700 years ago)!

Many of these incredible works of art were completely unknown to the outside world until the latter part of the 19th century, when they were discovered and recorded by pastoralist Joseph Bradshaw, who discovered the unusual art while searching for pastoral land. Seeing these remote, open-air galleries is surreal as you feel as though you are in someone’s sacred space.

5 Step Guide to Exploring the Kimberley

There are few places as accessible, but untouched, as the West Coast of Australia. The Kimberley region lies between the two nearest major cities of Broome (Western Australia) and Darwin (Northern Territory,) and both act as great starting points for your journey to one of the most naturally diverse wonders of the world! 

In terms of size, the Kimberley is larger than 75% of all countries, and has a whole host of tours ranging from a few days up to several weeks – across a vast expanse of scenic beauty. We thought that this natural wonder of the world deserved a five-step guide to travelling there, as the wide range of activities on offer is guaranteed to capture your imagination.

Step 1: How do I get there?

If you choose to travel by vehicle, it is only possible during the dry season, and even then you are risking a great deal in one of the least densely populated places in the world. 4WD knowledge and experience is a must, with accommodation options, supplies, and services along the way being altogether sparse. The extra work means this route is not for the faint hearted; but luckily, there is a solution for you!

Step 3: When should I visit?

The Kimberley region experiences two distinct seasons–a dry season and a wet tropical monsoon season. Most of the rainfall in the area occurs from November to April (wet season), which severely restricts travel (both by land and sea) due to the flooding of the gravel and dirt roadways that make it accessible.

The best time to visit the Kimberley is during the dry season, which runs from May to September. At the beginning of the dry season, you are far more likely to get a glimpse of the area’s amazing waterfalls. It is important to note that this region is generally regarded as one of the hottest places in all of Australia, where temperatures can reach upwards of 40°C (108°F) as the wet season approaches during November. In the dry season, temperatures are much more hospitable, with highs averaging around 25°C (80°F) during the day.

As most of the areas national parks open fully during the dry season (not the case during the wet season), wildlife is far easier to spot due to the fact that animals are not as far spread out. This is because during the wet season, the rains allow the floodplains to absorb a much greater portion of animal life.

Step 4: What do I bring?

In terms of packing for the journey, you’ll want to focus on clothing designed for warmer weather. But bringing a light jacket and a pair of long pants is a good idea in case of cooler nights or the odd passing shower. Since sunny skies will be the common norm, it’s also wise to bring a good pair of sunglasses (polarised) and a hat!

We recommend that if you don’t already, a bit of exercise leading up to the big trip will mean you can enjoy all the adventurous activities available in the Kimberley region. As mentioned before, cruising is far easier than any land-based journey, but we recommend you still prepare yourself by taking longer walks before your trip. Of course, there is always a reward, mainly in the form of the natural beauty and intrigue to motivate you throughout the hike!

Voltage in Australia varies at 230/250V, and we use 3-pin slanted plugs. While this may accommodate electronics from European, Asian, and African countries, you will likely need a converter and an adapter for your electronics if you are traveling from China, Japan or the United States of America. 

And finally, remember to pack more than enough of any prescription medications you require, along with over-the-counter medications for minor ailments that may arise during your trip as a precaution.
